About CipherOS

CipherOS is a free, open source operating system based on Android, built to refine the mobile experience rather than crowd it. Rooted in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), CipherOS delivers a considered, bloat free interface that respects your time, your battery, and above all your privacy. It is built and maintained in the open by a small team and a community of contributors. We strip away what you do not need so that what remains is fast, clean, secure, and fully under your control.

Our mission is to provide a clean, bloat free, and dependable mobile experience, with an interface that is easy on the eye and an architecture that protects your data. A phone should be a tool, not a surveillance device. Software updates should arrive on time. Advertisements have no place in an operating system. None of these should be premium features. They are the baseline.

CipherOS does not process personal data. There is no account system, no profile, no identifier assigned to you, and no mechanism in the operating system by which your activity can be reported to us or to anyone else. We hold no personal data about you because we never receive any. No analytics software development kit is linked into any CipherOS system application. No advertising framework is present. No component of the operating system reports to a CipherOS server during normal use. The one network request the platform makes on its own is the over the air update check, which carries only your device codename and current build version. It carries no account and no persistent identifier, it cannot be linked to you, and it can be disabled in Settings without affecting the rest of the system. The complete CipherOS source tree is published at https://github.com/CipherOS and may be read by anyone. You are free to clone, copy, fork, compile, modify, and study our code for your own personal use, for evaluation, for testing, for security research, and for academic purposes. Build it for your own devices and tell us what you find. Using our code in a commercial product, a commercial service, or any other distributed project requires prior written permission granted by no fewer than two Directors of The CipherOS Project. This includes shipping CipherOS or a derivative as the factory operating system on hardware you sell, redistributing it under another name, and bundling it into another distribution or software product. Code inherited from AOSP and other upstream projects remains licensed under its own terms, including the Apache Licence 2.0 and the GNU General Public Licence version 2, and nothing above restricts the rights those licences give you.

The CipherOS name, the CipherOS logo, the Cipher application names, and the Seamless Aqua Design identity are marks of The CipherOS Project. You may state accurately that your work is based on CipherOS. Naming your distribution CipherOS, presenting it as an official build, or using our marks in a way that suggests endorsement requires prior written permission from two Directors.

Seamless Aqua Design is our design language: a system built around fluid surfaces, translucent depth, and effortless motion. It feels at home on a modern Android device while remaining unmistakably ours, and it carries through every Cipher app from end to end.
